Tips For Parents:

Enjoy yourselves at a competition.

Try to look relaxed, calm, and positive when watching a competition.

Have a life of your own outside your child’s sport.

Avoid basing your self esteem and ego on your child’s success.

Be a positive role model who values attitude and effort.

Be respectful of other parents and their children at sporting events.

Help police parent ranks.

Parents Helping Their Children:

Help them set realistic goals.  Focus on the process of the performance.

Provide a healthy perspective to help your child understand success and failure.  Maintain a proper perspective.  Dealing with adversity, delaying gratification, and learning optimism are real signs of self esteem and maturity.

Emphasize and reward effort and attitude rather than results.  Model the lessons you want them to learn.  An improved performance is better than winning.

Provide unconditional love.  Show your child love regardless of the outcome.  It is not about the parent.

Always address bad behavior.  Work with the coaches, never against them.

Avoid making them talk immediately after a competition.

Avoid showing negative emotions while watching them perform.

Remember – continuous good effort and a positive attitude are the definitions of success.
