Michael Clark

“Youth sports and fitness - what's enough, what's too much?”

 

Dr. Michael Clark, DPT, MS, CES, PES, is chief executive officer of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).  Men’s Health magazine selected Dr. Clark as “Health and Fitness Visionary of the Year” for his role in shaping the future of the health and fitness industry. 

 

During his talk, Dr. Clark will review the importance of physical fitness and exercise to the healthy development of children -- intellectually, emotionally and physically, including what is the appropriate level of exercise for growing children.  He will touch on the risks of overtraining during the teenage years and importance of rest and proper nutrition. 

 

Recognized as one of the top physical therapists in the industry, Dr. Clark has rehabilitated, reconditioned and trained hundreds of professional and elite athletes.  His list of athlete clients includes MVP’s, All-Stars and Champions from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, MLS and Olympic athletes.  He is entering his 10th season as the team physical therapist for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns.  In 1996 and 2000, Dr. Clark served as a physical therapist in the Olympic Games.  He has also worked with A-list celebrities and most recently served as Shaquille O’Neil’s’ injury prevention and performance coach on the primetime television show “Shaq vs.”

 

 

Wendy Mogel

“How to be an effective parent in a culture that breeds anxiety and entitlement in older children and teens”

 

Dr. Wendy Mogel is a nationally known clinical psychologist, parent educator and school consultant. She is the author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee, a best selling parenting book now in its nineteenth printing.

 

Her long-awaited upcoming book The Blessing of a B Minus: Using Jewish Teaching to Raise Resilient Teenagers, addresses the question she is asked most frequently: how to be an effective parent in a culture that breeds anxiety and entitlement in older children and teens.


Dr. Mogel has been a keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the National Association of Independent Schools, the National Association of Principals of Schools for Girls, the Educational Records Bureau, the Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools, and the American Montessori Society, and the American Camping Association.  


She is the co-founder of the Los Angeles Association of Independent School Counselors and serves on numerous boards including the Atlanta-based Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education. She contributes articles to a variety of educational publications including Independent School Magazine, Camping Magazine, and the Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.

 

 

Carol Dweck

“Why students succeed and how to foster their success.”

 

Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford. Her research focuses on why students succeed and how to foster their success. More specifically, her work has highlighted the critical role of mindsets in students’ achievement, and has shown how praise for intelligence or talent can undermine motivation and learning.

 

Dweck has held professorships at Columbia and Harvard Universities, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and has lectured to education, business, and sports groups all over the world. She recently won the Ann Brown Award for contributions to developmental psychology (2009), the Donald Campbell Award for contributions to social psychology (2008), the Klingenstein Award for Leadership in Education (2010), and the E.L. Thorndike Career Achievement Award in Educational Psychology (2010).

 

Her work has been prominently featured in such publications as The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and she has appeared on Today, Good Morning America, 20/20, and NPR’s Morning Edition, and Nightline. Her recent book Mindset (published by Random House) has been widely acclaimed and is being translated into 17 languages.

All workshops begin at 6:45 p.m. with dessert, presentations start at 7 pm. and end at 8:30 p.m.

 

Workshops will be held at The Tenvold Student Center at The Seven Hills School.  The public is welcome, and educators are admitted free of charge.
