Frequently Asked Questions

List of 9 frequently asked questions.

  • Q: Which cryptocurrencies can I donate?

We accept virtually all major cryptocurrencies. See a complete list here. All cryptocurrency donations are converted to traditional U.S. Dollars upon receipt.
  • Q: Is donating cryptocurrency tax deductible?

You should always consult with a tax professional to evaluate your individual circumstances. Generally speaking, donating cryptocurrency is a non-taxable event, and donors do not owe capital gains tax based on the current exchange value of cryptocurrency at the time of donation, and can typically deduct the fair market value of the donation on their taxes. This often makes Bitcoin, Ethereum and other cryptocurrency donations one of the most tax efficient ways to support your favorite cause. Talk to a crypto-savvy tax professional or connect with The Giving Block to get connected with one. If you want to learn more about how donating crypto can lower your taxes, check out thegivingblock.com/faq.
  • Q: Will I get a receipt with my donation?

You will automatically receive a receipt from receipts@thegivingblock.com as soon as the transaction is confirmed on the blockchain. This changes depending on the blockchain – you can refer to this guide for estimates and more information.
  • Q: Are cryptocurrency donations to Seven Hills refundable?

All cryptocurrency donations made to Seven Hills via The Giving Block are nonrefundable. When you donate crypto, The Giving Block immediately converts your donation to fiat currency (in our case, U.S. Dollars), which means all donations are final and nonrefundable. The Giving Block and Seven Hills do not, have not, and will never offer any form of goods, services, or cryptocurrency airdrop in return for a donation.
  • Q: Can I donate anonymously?

Yes, of course! To request that your donation be marked as anonymous, please email Director of Development Amy Walters. To ensure all donors receive a tax receipt, you will be prompted to enter your name, email address, and address information during the crypto donation process.
  • Q: I need a wallet address to complete my donation. Where can I access this information?

You can generate a wallet address by using our widget above.
    1. Choose the currency you wish to donate.
    2. Put in any amount for the pledge (don’t worry – receipts will match the actual amount donated, the amount in the widget doesn’t matter and is just used to generate a wallet to receive the donation).
    3. Enter your donor information – name, email address, and address.
Once you reach the third page, the widget will generate a dynamic wallet address you can use to complete your donation.
  • Q: Why is the wallet address different every time?

When using The Giving Block widget you’ll notice that a new wallet address is created every time. This is because The Giving Block uses dynamic wallets, each one paired specifically with the donor information and cryptocurrency type selected in the widget, and with Seven Hills.

This is done to protect your privacy and ours. Doing so helps prevent third parties from viewing all of your transaction history simply by copying and pasting the wallet address or TXID into a block explorer.

All wallets that are generated are associated with your donor information AND ours forever. This means that you can reuse the wallet as often as you’d like or you can generate a new one each time. It’s up to you. In some cases, users want to re-use an address because they’ve added it as a payout address in an app or smart contract.

Note that for ETH, after the first donation is sent, the wallet is converted to a smart contract. For more information regarding smart contracts, please click here.
  • Q: What happens if I send unsupported currencies using The Giving Block widget?

Please only send the exact cryptocurrency type used in the widget to create the dynamic wallet. Do not send any other cryptocurrencies (including layer 2, wrapped tokens, NFTs, ERC-721s, BEP20s, or other ERC-20 tokens not listed) as these are unsupported and will result in the donation being lost and is not recoverable. For further information, please click here.
  • Q: Why can I donate Polygon (MATIC) but not tokens sent via the Polygon network?

The Giving Block supports the ERC-20 Polygon (MATIC) asset but, does not support transfers via the Polygon/Matic network. In order to successfully donate Polygon (MATIC) to a charity please be sure the assets you are transferring are on the Ethereum mainnet (ERC-20 token).
