Parent Lecture Series

A long standing tradition at The Seven Hills School, the Parent Lecture Series brings renowned speakers to our Walnut Creek campus, who share insights, advice and inspiration on current parenting and education topics. Offered to parents, educators and community members throughout the East Bay, the Series is held two-three times a year and is an extension of the School’s mission to “develop the intellect, engage the spirit and foster respect for and responsibility to our world.”

We are excited to present our 2017-18 speakers:

  • The Gift of Adversity!

    Jason Dorland
    January 24, 2018
“The most devastating moment of my life” is how Jason Dorland used to describe Olympic final failure in rowing at the 1988 Seoul Summer Games. Now, he describes that moment as a gift—the catalyst to his most transformative life experience ever. Jason used to be “in it to win it,” focused on results, rather than appreciating the journey. Years later, he has turned incidents that most would define as adversity, into positive and rewarding opportunities. An author, Olympian, coach, entrepreneur, and storyteller, Jason will challenge us to rethink our traditional perspectives on high-performance in business, sport, and life, and ask us to explore how we can achieve personal success with greater fulfillment and joy.

    Dr. Derrick Gay
    October 18, 2017
Dr. Derrick Gay is an internationally recognized consultant to schools and other organizations on issues of diversity, inclusion, and global citizenship. In this lecture, Dr. Gay will discuss the skills today’s children need to excel in our interconnected, global society. The ability to communicate with and understand people who are different from one another is a non-negotiable skill essential for students as they navigate through diverse college, professional, and social environments. Parents will learn how they can cultivate cultural competency to enhance their child's success in the 21st century.
How does Seven Hills get these amazing speakers? I tell everyone I know about them and always bring a friend or neighbor.

— Julie, Seven Hills parent
