Seven Hills Among Nation’s First Schools to Join Making Caring Common Project

Caring Schools #CommonGood Campaign Led by Harvard’s Making Caring Common Project Launched on March 6

We're taking new steps to promote the #CommonGood!

The Seven Hills School is among the nation’s first schools to join a new national campaign to help educators, parents, and communities raise children who are caring, responsible to their communities, and committed to justice. Led by the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Making Caring Common project, the Caring Schools #CommonGood campaign aims to mobilize schools to take action to bridge divides and build stronger communities.

“Our country is at a crossroads,” said Dr. Richard Weissbourd, Senior Lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Faculty Director of the Making Caring Common project. “We need to mobilize the great strengths of Americans to prepare young people to build strong, inclusive communities and to protect democracy.”

The campaign seeks to advance the following specific goals, building on the successful Turning the Tide initiative:

Deepen students’ care for others and their communities;
Increase equity and access for all students in the college admissions process; and
Reduce excessive achievement pressure in communities where it is detrimental to students.

To join the campaign, schools commit to taking substantial, meaningful action to advance one or more of the campaign’s goals and to engage in an evaluation process to measure the impact of their actions. Seven Hills was one of more than 135 schools to earn a special designation as an “early leader” who helped to shape and build momentum for the campaign.Seven Hills’ commitments include:

· Build a caring, inclusive community via data.

· Collaborate with parents to promote ethical development.

“As we embark on the NAIS AIM (Assessment for Inclusivity and Multiculturalism) this spring, all constituents in our community will be asked to take an online survey to measure our climate and inclusivity,” said Head of School Kathleen McNamara. “This data will help us to set goals, and hold ourselves accountable through the Harvard project and our own CAIS accreditation during 2019-20. I am excited that Seven Hills will be a part of this new research to prepare young people to create a better world.”

As part of the launch on March 6, Seven Hills joined other early leaders on Facebook and Twitter using the Caring Schools #CommonGood hashtag to express support for the campaign, publicly commit to a chosen action(s), and encourage schools nationwide to join the effort.
