Each spring, Seven Hills hosts an Open House in which student work – in the classroom and from the art studio – is showcased for admiring friends and family.

Lower School Art

The art curriculum inspires our students to explore and appreciate sensory elements, including color, design, and texture in both nature and in the many forms art takes throughout the world. Seven Hills encourages students to use imaginative problem solving to foster their creative development. In the early grades, a wide range of materials and techniques are introduced, including clay, pastels, oils, watercolor, and fibers. Painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, and printmaking allow students both variety and multiple exposure to details that stir emotions; line, texture, shape, value and color. As students move through the Lower School, they become familiar with different artists and the more formal elements; balance, unity, rhythm, emphasis, repetition, and contrast.

The art forms of various cultures are discussed and incorporated into student work. The program instills an understanding of the role of creativity, visualization, and problem-solving skills for a 21st century world view. The program establishes the foundations of art production by exploring the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students are exposed to a wide range of art media and techniques. Students also study a variety of artworks and accomplishments of contemporary, historic, and prehistoric cultures; understanding that art reflects, records, and shapes history and plays a role in every culture.

We instill confidence and an appreciation of creative expression by cultivating a personal connection to creativity. By expanding their visual arts knowledge and skills, students are able to express their ideas and communicate responses to experiences. This individualized approach to creativity helps students to respect the originality in their own artwork and in the work of others. The visual arts curriculum ensures that each student will find success in the art room through creative growth.
