The skills mastered through self-direction in second grade are expanded in third grade, as students develop greater independence and responsibility. Peer collaboration and small group learning experiences add a new dimension to the learning process. Teachers Emily Tolosa, Clare Bisho and Heather Harrington with Math Coordinator Kellen Bothwell, and Science Coordinator, Stephanie Chiang guide their students through an engaging, rigorous, standards-based curriculum. Whether it is a science investigation, a math challenge driven by a real-world problem, or re-enactment of the Oregon Trail, third grade students are active participants rather than passive recipients of knowledge.
Literature and literary analysis are introduced and the five-step writing process is taught. Rubrics and portfolios are used to help students see their growth as writers. Geometric and algebraic patterns, rules and attributes are taught, and multiplication and division and numeration through hundred thousands place value is introduced. Problem solving emphasizes communication of thought process and learning to see more than one way to find an answer.
Third grade students become “Big Buddies” to the Preschool and Pre-K students this year. This first experience with being a big buddy helps to develop compassion, confidence and friendships with younger students that are maintained throughout their years at Seven Hills.
The third grade team believes in a strong home-school relationship to help support children and their individual needs. We communicate weekly through progress log reflections and our webpage. Families are invited to participate in learning through math centers, field trips and class projects. We also have an open door policy and appreciate time to work with families.
Developmentally, students grow and become more independent during third grade. We make sure to support them emotionally and academically through this process and enjoy seeing them change as we prepare and challenge them throughout the year.
